Inspired by the pantheon of tragic circus elephant stories (Jumbo, Water for Elephants, Modoc) but told by a "primate" in place of a pachyderm. About the host: Ambrose Martos has worked as clown, actor, and burlesque artist in New York City and around the world. Highlights include performing in Cirque du Soleil's Quidam, Slava's Snowshow, Speedmouse with the Umbilical Brothers, and Julie Taymor's film Across the Universe. He graduated from the Ringling Bros. Clown College and soon after formed a physical comedy trio called Happy Hour, which has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Guggenheim Museum, Symphony Space, and the Comedy Central Stage. He often hosts burlesque shows at the Slipper Room in New York and his alter-ego Manchego has been seen in London, Berlin, Stockholm, and San Francisco. He was a finalist in the 2006 Andy Kaufman Comedy Competition, and for many years worked in hospitals as a clown doctor of The Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit.

A bottom-up approach to exploring burlesque movement while integrating your whole body! Taught by Baltimore´s award-winning acrobatic burlesque starlet. Learn from the best in a fun and outrageous atmosphere! You will learn to use traditional burlesque props such as boas and stockings while finding your most extreme, silly, sexy and creative physicality. Suitable for all levels of student.
Each class will start with a warm-up, teach a small combination, and lead you through group improvs to help you develop your own style of movement. Every class will concentrate on a part of the body AND some of the burlesque props you can use with that body part. There will be homework each week and you must obtain the items listed for each class. This class is great for all levels of student.

Boarding will begin at 6:30,the boat (a triple-decker Mississippi style riverboat!) will shove off at 7:30. There will be drinks and food available as we watch the sun set, then the show begins. We'll be back in the dock by around 11:00.
Tickets for these type of cruise can run $30 or $40. In keeping with the Slipper Room tradition of being the people's theatre, tickets are only $15. There is a two drink minimum, but don't stop there!

The Slipper Room's illustrious owner James Habacker presents--and, in guise of Chester Mackerel, charming professor of abnormal psychology, hosts--a night of exuberant entertainment to ignite the senses. JC Hopkins' Biggish Band plays rollicking hard bop swing all night featuring guest vocalists tap-dancing sensation DeWitt Fleming Jr, velvet-voiced Jolie Holland, and Tony-nominated downtown icon Justin
Bond, in addition to JC's resident front-woman Queen Esther. The always-surprising Julie Atlas Muz (Miss Exotic World 2006), the jaw- droppingly stylish Ms. Tickle, and hilariously naughty Trixie Little & Evil Hate Monkey perform feats of burlesque to live accompaniment by the band all night. In band breaks, 1920s tap sensation The Minsky Sisters amuse and titillate you. The cabaret runs 9pm-12am in the formal Dining Room, preceded at 8:30pm by a complimentary dance class. After the cabaret, DJ Shakey spins a most unique mix of vintage + modern beats to keep you dancing.

All levels. This workshop will lead you to discover, sharpen and magnify your unique physicality and personality in a burlesque style. Whether you are a burlesque virgin, or a professional, we'll help you pull out an EVEN bigger, bolder persona for use on stage and in life. Through a combination of movement lessons, improv exercises, writing, performance games and critiques you will learn to embody our first rule inside and out: MAKE IT BIGGER. Bring sexy costume pieces (if you have them) to use in class- ie: boa, gloves, gown, heels, bra and undies. Can be worn over dance clothes for warmth/comfort. DRESS WARM & FOR MOVEMENT BUT BRING YOUR HEELS!
WORKSHOP #2: BIGGER RISK= BIGGER REWARD
Suitable for intermediate/advanced performers. This workshop will use a circus approach to push your burlesque act to its limits- we will roll, jump, climb, manipulate and test gravity while incorporating burlesque props such as boas, chairs, fans, heels, etc We will be inventing and attempting moves that require spotters/assistants to learn. We will adapt exercises to all levels, but the class is highly recommended to performers with an existing act (can be any style of performance that would be in a variety show: singing, burlesque, bellydance, juggling, hula hoop, etc). Dress to roll around on the floor, wear layers as it may be cold in the space, also bring one prop you are currently interested in, if you have one.

Trixie & Monkey's Burlesque Bootcamp Intensive Baltimore, MD Price: $175 WORKSHOP IS FULL! Check back later in the year for another installment of this workshop! This workshop will help you hone your ideas for bringing sass and class to the stage! Acts can be striptease, circus or vaudeville. Lots of individual attention. Workshop culminates in a public show on Fri March 2nd at The Patterson! We strongly encourage anyone interested in the variety arts to sign up for this class! It's for people who already know that they WANT to perform- not necessarily for people who want to TRY performing. This is kind of the real nuts-n-bolts of putting an act together...We will basically be taking students through our exact process for act creation- including conception, writing, character development, breaking down counts of music, choreographing, costuming and ultimately: razzle-dazzle! All tailored to what you're trying to do.
